With defensive tackles a bit of a scarcity in-state for the 2018 class, the Florida Gators coaching staff has used the spring evaluation period to add several new targets to their recruiting board. This past week the latest prospect at this position offered by the Gators was Kissimmee (Fla.) Gateway defensive tackle
Dennis Briggs.
According to the three-star defender, the offer from UF came after a visit to his high school from area recruiter
Brad Davis.
“Coach Davis was by my school last week on Thursday and my coach told me he hung out for a while just asking questions about me just trying to get to know more about me since he is new. My coach shot me a text message the other day [Thursday] telling me Coach Davis got in touch and that Florida wanted to offer me. I talked with Coach Davis after and he was excited to tell me.”
Before the offer from Coach Davis, Briggs has kept in touch mostly with Gators defensive coordinator
Randy Shannon. Over the last handful of months, Briggs feels his communication with the Gators has picked up.
“Right now Coach Shannon has been talking back and forth with me for a few months and Coach Davis has been pretty new to me since he just was hired and was by my school recently. I feel like that relationship is growing and I am talking with them pretty constantly.”
In the past, the 6-foot-4, 252-pounder has visited Florida for a camp and a game. Living only a few hours from The Swamp, Briggs is already very familiar with Florida’s program and campus.
“I know they are a great program athletically and academically,” said Briggs. “I feel they have always have been athletically with all the SEC championships they have won and the last two years under Coach Mac has gotten them the East title. They are another option for me to stay in-state so that is great.”
So far this spring Briggs has visited Miami’s campus twice as well as Florida State. A visit to Florida was in play as well, but did not materialize. With offer now in hand, Briggs plans to be back in Gainesville once spring football concludes.
“Definitely in the summer I will get up there and check it out again,” said Briggs. “I have been there for a camp and a game before in the past. They showed me the facilities and stuff the last time I was there so I look forward to seeing their whole campus in general.”
On the recruiting front, Briggs is staying away from naming any out right leader, but many feel Florida State and Miami have the edge. If you ask Briggs he says he talks the most with programs like Duke, Florida, Florida State, Miami, N.C. State, Oregon, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
In the coming months, he plans to make a more manageable list of leaders.
“Right now my plan is sometime like early July or the middle of July to put out a top 10 or something like that. Then I will continue to narrow things down until signing day.”
The 247Sports Composite, an industry generate average, currently ranks Briggs as the No. 51 defensive tackle in the 2018 class.
